A named designer
One person owns your project from the first sketch to the install-ready set. Their calendar, not a ticket queue, and you meet them by name on the discovery call.
Our story
In 1985, Chuck Smith started Alpha Zeta, a landscape design and build firm in Palm City, Florida. For four decades his team has drawn, planted, and built gardens across the Treasure Coast, the kind of work where you answer for every plant because you are the one putting it in the ground.
For years, homeowners outside the area asked him to design their yards too. He kept saying no. Designing a property he could not stand on, from satellite images alone, was exactly the wrong way to make a garden, and he would not put his name on it.
Sol & Arbor is how he finally said yes, without lowering the standard. Every plan still starts with the place. Photos, measurements, and a real read of your soil, your light, and how you actually want to live outside. The drawing comes second.
Today an in-house design team works from the same Palm City studio, designing for homeowners across the country. The company has grown. The reason it exists has not.
You can automate or use AI to create a rendering. But you cannot automate the forty-five years of experience thinking through every aspect and element that a home owner needs.

Why Sol & Arbor
Every studio says it cares. These are the four commitments we have turned down work to protect, the reasons a project looks and builds the way it does.
One person owns your project from the first sketch to the install-ready set. Their calendar, not a ticket queue, and you meet them by name on the discovery call.
Plant choices answer to your zone, your soil, your salt exposure. A plan for Naples is not a plan for Nantucket, and we will not pretend otherwise.
Renderings are backed by construction documents any quality contractor can execute. We have built for forty years, so we draw what actually goes in the ground.
No algorithm designs your garden and no offshore drafting queue touches it. The whole studio is in-house, in the United States, and accountable to you.
In their words
We thoroughly enjoyed working with Chris and highly recommend Sol and Arbor to anyone looking for thoughtful, creative landscape design and a designer who genuinely listens to his clients. We couldn’t be happier with our experience working with Chris at Sol and Arbor. We came to him with an initial landscape plan and a vision for what we wanted our property to become, and Chris took those ideas and elevated them into something far more comprehensive and creative. From the overall design to the individual plant selections, Chris collaborated closely with us every step of the way. He really understood the look and feeling we were trying to achieve and helped bring together the right combination of tropical plants, colors, textures, and forms to create the lush tropical oasis we had envisioned. As designers ourselves, we have a particular appreciation for creativity, thoughtful design, and attention to detail. Chris brought all of that to the project while also being very receptive to our own ideas. It felt like a true collaboration, and his creativity and innovative thinking added tremendously to the final design. We thoroughly enjoyed working with Chris and highly recommend Sol and Arbor to anyone looking for thoughtful, creative landscape design and a designer who genuinely listens to his clients.
